‘Thame, where the past is all around you’

At a crossing on the River Thame, this historic town originated as a Saxon settlement, becoming a new market town after the Norman Conquest when it came under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Lincoln. With a mention in the Domesday Book and beautiful, historic architecture everywhere, Thame is a town where the past is all around you.

This is indeed a market town; the right to hold a weekly market was granted by Royal Charter in the 12th century. Today a large market is still held, as is a monthly farmers’ market and a twice-weekly cattle market. A main feature of the town centre is its conservation area with an almost complete absence of modern buildings. Instead, examples of diverse architecture that dates back to the 13th century together with numerous superb shops make Theme the quintessential market town.

This is also the place where visitors begin their exploration of the picturesque landscape of the Oxford Plain, the Phoenix Trail and the Oxfordshire Way that takes in several neighbouring country villages.
